Water.

It’s that magical resource that we should be drinking a lot of on a regular basis. But let’s be honest, most of us don’t get quite enough water.

So, how much water should you be drinking a day? There are two methods to figure this out.

Method #1: Water and Body Weight

There’s this very old myth that we should all be drinking 64 ounces of water a day. 64 ounces equals eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day.

Honestly, 8 glasses of water are very little. Most people can’t even get 64 ounces and they are still dehydrated.

Here’s a method that you can use instead.

Take your actual body weight and divide it in half. The number you come up with is how much water you should have a day in ounces.

For me, I currently weigh 298 lbs as of the writing of this blog post. That means I should have 149 ounces a day.

I will say that I almost never get to 149 ounces a day. Instead, I shoot for a gallon a day. That’s 128 ounces a day which is double the amount of that old 8 glasses a day myth.

Water intake is relative to how much you weigh. Some people need more water than most. Others need less water than some.

Water makes up to 75% of your body weight. You need it for your body to function properly.

Method #2: What Is Your Urine Color?

You had to know I was going this direction for the other method: your urine color.

Your urine can tell you a lot about hydration. If your urine is brown, you are severely dehydrated and need to drink immediately.

If your urine is clear like water then you are overly hydrated. You may want to slow down on the water intake. Plus, you’re probably in the bathroom way more than you should.

Your urine color should be more like a pale yellow. Just a slight indication of yellow. This means you are properly hydrated.

Again, you’ll probably be in the bathroom a lot but your body will appreciate you for the hydration.

Water is an important nutrient for your bodily functions. Make sure you’re getting enough water in a day. As a rule of thumb, shoot for a gallon a day. If that’s too much, then adjust for what will work for you.
