The Beginner’s Guide To Weight Loss: Get Your Mindset Right

Yesterday, we talked about weight loss and how it is a process. This journey will be a long one so buckle in and enjoy the ride.

Today, we should talk about your mind. To get specific, let’s talk about your mindset and how to get it on the right path.

Anything you do in life, you do it for a reason. You go to work to get paid. You go to the movies to be entertained. Social media is your haven to find out what’s going on with your friends and the world.

This notion of why can also be used for weight loss.

Most of us don’t look at the why when we have a problem to solve. We look at the how and what.

For weight loss, your why is important.

Yesterday, I asked you to do an assignment. I asked you to write down several reasons why you want to lose weight. Then, I asked you to also write reasons why you couldn’t (or can’t) lose weight.

So, let’s tackle the reasons why you couldn’t lose weight.

Really look at your list and think if those things are really true. Or do you just think they are true?

You become what you believe.

If you think you can’t do something, then that becomes the result.

I know that you can do everything on the list that you wrote down. You may not do it the first, second, or even third time, but I know you can do those things.

You have to think with positivity.

Negative thoughts will only bring you down or even worse, they will hold you back from achieving your goals.

Do this. Throw out the negative list only if you don’t believe what you wrote down. It will be a reset for your mind.

Trust me. Your head has no room for negative talk.

Now, on to the reasons why you want to lose weight.

What did you write down on your why list? Are they detailed enough? Did you get down to the true reason why you want to lose weight?

As I said yesterday, most people use generic statements of why they want to lose weight.

I’m sure you didn’t. Right?

I asked you to write down these why’s because this is what you will always refer back to when times get tough. You can look back at this list and remember why you started in the first place.

It’s powerful stuff!

Your “why” is your North Star. It’s your beacon of light, so to speak. You will get lost off your path at some point. You will use those “whys” to get you back on track.

Post those “whys” in different places. On a mirror in your bathroom when you don’t want to go to the gym in the morning. Post it on your refrigerator when you feel the need to overeat. I even have mine as my wallpaper on my iPhone just to remind myself every day.

Do what works for you.

I will say one last thing. If you don’t know why you want to lose weight, then you will just focus on the how and what. Those don’t lead to long-term success in weight loss.

I can tell you how and what to do to lose weight. But if you don’t know why you want to lose weight, then it’s a never ending cycle of frustration.

Before I let you go, I have a homework assignment for you. I’m sure you thought I forgot.

I want you to download an app on your phone that helps you track your calories. I use MyFitnessPal. I have also used Lose It in the past. Use whatever you want. These are just suggestions.

Download an app then follow the instructions to find out how many calories you’re supposed to have in one day.
